Creating a mood board for the year is one of my favorite things about the start of a new year. It’s so exciting to reflect on the previous year, and look ahead to what’s next. Looking to set the tone for your new year? Here’s my 2018 life & style inspiration.
2017 just flew by.
Raise your hand if you say this every single year *raises hand*. But really, it did. It’s one of the first years where I’m looking back now and can see pretty much exactly how each decision I made at this time last year impacted the course of my entire 2017. 2017 was a year of choosing the unconventional over the traditional. I withdrew myself from the final rounds of a job interview for a design position that just a month before I would have JUMPED on. I turned career opportunities down. And instead, I chose ministry (read about my summer in Canada here). Like, what?? It was unexpected and difficult and yet in the midst of that, maybe the most fruitful year I’ve had. Our careers are so important as they are not only what we have to spend the majority of our time focusing on, but also because they give a cause, meaning, and legacy to our lives. So, making sure you’re doing something you love is important. If you’re feeling uninspired by your current role, think outside the box about how you can turn what you love, such as travel, into a career, such as training to become a travel advisor with the help of entretravel.com.
On last year’s mood board, I used the phrase “change is growth”. Man, who knew how accurate that would be. 2017 was a year of changing plans, changing expectations, changing goals and physical locations, and perhaps most importantly, a changing on perspective. 2017 seemed like a pretty craptacular year for a lot of people, but I’ve gotta say – I think it was a pretty solid year.
Now it’s on to the new
If 2017 was about choosing the unconventional over the traditional, I believe 2018 will be the year of stopping with the “maybes” and start with the doing (like launching KM Creative). It will be a year of ignoring the “shoulds” and moving forward with what is right for ME. When I interned at O’Neill, I was called both “rad” and “ballsy” which sort of turned into a motto – be rad, be ballsy. Words to live by, ok. And for 2018, that phrase was the inspiration for “be wildly bold”. Same idea, minus having to use the words “ballsy” because… I just can’t do it. Be wildly bold, when set as my theme for the year, will flow over into everything if I let it: physical health, career moves, and overall mindfulness in my day to day life.
Other things to note about the visual inspiration for the new year:
- Clearly still feeling the neutral game for 2018 – especially as it relates to style
- Excited to continue evening routines (reading, tea, essential oils, oh my) to help stress less
- Didn’t include Pantone’s color of the year (more on that later) but I’m all about these more natural, muted colors…like, how perfect are those flowers!
- I want that van drawing to come to life and be my van, because #goals
- Sounds cliche, but I’m dreaming big, holding my expectations with open palms, and just…wow, I have such an expectant feeling about 2018.
This year I’m keeping my specific written goals mostly to myself – not because I don’t want you guys to know, but rather because I want to do them for me. I mean, I’m not some self-actualized minimalist self-help vegan guru (if you are though honestly congrats), just a girl working on my physical, personal, and career goals for a better me. Cheers to that!
